Air Quality Strategy
Residents are being asked to have their say on a new strategy about improving the air quality across Charnwood. The draft Charnwood Air Quality Strategy, developed by the borough council, sets out how the Council will collaborate with residents, stakeholders, and businesses to improve air quality in the area.
A consultation has been launched for residents and businesses to have their say on the draft strategy, make suggestions or raise any concerns they may have about the air quality in the borough.
The consultation will run until 11.59pm on Monday, 24 March 2025.
The points of the draft Charnwood Air Quality Strategy include:
- the actions that the borough council will deliver between 2025 and 2030 in order to reduce concentrations of air pollutants and exposure to air pollution
- reducing health inequalities from air pollution
- raising public awareness of the health implications of poor air quality
- reducing domestic, industrial, and agricultural emissions
- reducing emissions from road transport.

The Charnwood Air Quality Strategy has been developed following on from the air quality in Charnwood improving significantly over the past decade. Last year, the Department for Environmental, Food and Rural affairs (DEFRA) instructed that the four Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) in Charnwood must be removed due to the improvements in these areas.
The strategy aims to see the continual improvement of the air quality in the borough. It is expected that the finalised Air Quality Strategy will be published in the summer of 2025.
