Flood Ready

Flooding is one of the most common natural hazards in the UK, affecting millions of properties due to rivers, heavy rain, or surface water. With climate change increasing risks, preparation can significantly reduce damage, stress, and disruption. In Charnwood, areas like Loughborough, Quorn, and along the River Soar are particularly vulnerable—recent updates show ongoing flood alerts for urban watercourses and tributaries, with river levels rising due to rainfall and snowmelt.

As of October 2025, no active warnings are reported, but you can check daily for changes: www.gov.uk/check-long-term-flood-risk

Around 6.3 million homes and businesses are in areas at risk of flooding, with many areas around Charnwood. Don't assume it won't happen to you. Learn what to do in a flood by scanning the QR Code.

Consultations launched over proposals for new town and parish councils

Communities are being encouraged to take part in consultations on proposals to create a town council for Loughborough and a parish council for Broadnook in the south of the borough.

Charnwood Borough Council has agreed to conduct two community governance reviews to amend electoral arrangements in those areas and is now seeking views.

The consultations run from 22nd September 2025 to 30th November 2025.

The Council is proposing to create a town council for Loughborough due to the Government’s local government reorganisation plans which will see borough and county councils replaced with new unitary authorities.

Crime in Charnwood

Deborah attended the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership meeting on the 9th of October 2025 in her Shadow Cabinet role for Communities.

Charnwood Borough, including key areas like Loughborough, has seen a general downward trend in crime over the past year, with notable reductions in burglaries and anti-social behaviour (ASB). This aligns with broader efforts by Leicestershire Police, Charnwood Borough Council, and the Community Safety Partnership. However, the area still experiences a higher-than-average crime rate compared to some parts of Leicestershire, driven by violence and public order offences.

October 2025 Trends: Early data shows continued declines in crime across the Charnwood area, with no major spikes reported. At the meeting, the Partnership highlighted a year-on-year reduction in youth knife crime diversions and overall criminal exploitation.

The Safer Streets Summer Initiative (June–Sep 2025) has contributed to lower ASB during peak periods.

Violent and public order crimes dominate, but measures have curbed several categories:

  •        Violence Against the Person: ~35% of crimes (36.1k county-wide, down 4.5% Year on Year). In Charnwood, this includes assaults; rate at 36.9 per 1,000 (104% of national),
  •
  •        Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB): Significant reductions in Charnwood West. County-wide public order crimes down 13.5% (9.5k incidents).
  •
  •        Burglaries: Downward trajectory, credited to partnerships; specific Charnwood figures show ~10–15% drop in Q2 2025.
  •
  •       Other: Vehicle crime and property damage up slightly in pockets like Thurmaston (+2% Year on Year), but overall crime fell 3.7%.

Recent Initiatives and Community Efforts:

·         New Security Guards in Loughborough: Two guards now patrol the town centre to deter ASB and crime, in partnership with Love Loughborough and Charnwood Borough Council.

·         County Lines Intensification: Following June's 2025 success (county-wide arrests and disruptions), focus on reducing exploitation; next phase in October to December.

·         Road Safety and Speeding Operations: Ongoing in Charnwood West villages, with mobile speed guns and camera vans also targeting high-risk areas.

Charnwood's crime landscape is improving through targeted interventions, but citizen vigilance and reporting of suspicious activity remain key, as does making sure you report incidents. For hyper-local data, enter your postcode on the Leicestershire Police "Your Area" tool: www.leics.police.uk
